Fake Educational Degrees For a Fee
Much of the credit for India’s current economic performance - domestically and internationally – can be laid at the door of our highly educated and skilled workforce. This in turn is based on the extremely competitive and rapidly rising quality of higher education.
However, throughout our modern history, we have looked to the West as the benchmark and destination for quality education. An overseas qualification has been the passport for good jobs, a comfortable life, marriage and social standing. Getting a foreign degree still takes precedence for students. This is now. The compulsions are still the same but the pressures and competition is even greater. The costs of overseas education are astronomical and a successful graduation is not guaranteed. What to do? How does a student ensure that they will get a sure-fire degree? The answers lie in every HR manager’s nightmare - ‘diploma mills.’ Diploma mills are fake universities that hand out (for a fat fee, of course) degrees that require no study at all! These mills have existed for centuries. Today though, their business has exploded thanks to the Internet and the international demand for degrees. In the US there are more than 400 diploma mills and over 300 fake diploma web sites and counting. In Europe it is estimated that fake schools earn as much as $50 million dollars a year. From a couple of dozen fake organizations offering diplomas 10 years ago the number has gone up to over 300, today. Buying these degrees (especially the foreign ones) is a fairly good option for unscrupulous job hunters. The main reason is because it so difficult to verify whether the degrees are genuine. The really clever diploma mills have names that sound, or are very, similar to genuine and reputed universities. Employers have to be extra cautious when hiring prospective employees who possess foreign qualifications. Even then verification can be troublesome as many diploma mills are very professional and have a verification response service that will easily fool investigators. The most effective solution is to engage the services of a professional background screening company. One that has the resources and a global network to check and ensure that HR managers sleep well and companies are not at risk.
