Why bother checking backgrounds?

Employment background screening is an important tool in America for companies to make informed hiring decision.

As a major emerging outsourcing hub for the global economy, it is critical for India to screen employment backgrounds to establish comfort levels for overseas investors and customers seeking business opportunities in India. Proactive steps need to be taken to inspect candidate background to ensure that they are employable and reliable.

Indian professionally managed companies too have realized that they have to institute similar business practices as their American counterparts. Though a relatively new phenomenon in India, it will find increasing acceptance especially as the country will be seeing more foreign direct investment flow with many multinational companies setting up shop.

Background screening is important as this exercise will go a long way in helping an employer avoid misrepresentation of information by job seekers. Early detection could eliminate avoidable cost to the hiring entity later on. Outsourced background screening reduces pressures on staff and costs.

As there are no online systems for public record searches and education and employment verification, background screening in India and in most Asian countries is difficult. Manual processes have to be undertaken. The problem is accentuated if human resources departments do not have processes in place to reply to verification requests quickly.

Challenges lies in creating a higher level of awareness about the business and consolidating relationships with various sources of information. A background screening outfit has to continuously build relationships with universities and employers over a longer time frame to ensure timely response. Clients recognize that the collected data is not from proven sources and thus the guarantee of accuracy of information collected is limited.
