FAKING YALE

Yale, an IVY League school connotes academic excellence, selectivity in admissions, and a reputation for social elitism quite on the lines of IIMs & IITs in India. Yet, or more likely, thus, Yale appears to have a chequered record of fraudulent and faked admittance.

From 1995 onwards, Yale records show some 7 cases of defrauded admissions. Does that belie a trend? Or should it be seen as aberrations? Does it make a case for screening the documents of new admissions? What are the possible fallouts of these ‘wrong’ entries into the hallmark institutions?

The most recent case of a Akash Maharaj brings to the fore the question of screening admission documents with more force than ever before.

With straight A’s from Columbia, Maharaj managed a $32000 scholarship from Yale and another $15000 from Federal loans. After the deceit was discovered, it further came to light that Maharaj changed from New York University to Columbia and then to Yale.

Stranger still is the case of Patrick McDermit in 1977 for whom the charade was the whole point. A grudge with the L.A. Recruiting officer who stated McDermit would never make it egged him on to create an alter-ego and prove the officer wrong.

So he started pondering what it would take to prove the recruiting officer wrong, imagining a 20-year-old with “the most amazing record possible,” he said. He started composing a complete life story — and then stepped inside it.

His fantastic story fooled all till McDermit turned himself in and initially faced no consequences except banishment from Yale property. But his story sparked a national media obsession in newspapers and TV shows.

 THE OBC QUESTION

Fake grades and tampered documents etc are it appears passé at admissions to elite and also not-so-elite academia. With 27% reservation getting the SC nod, chances of eager students faking the caste certificate are not fictional. As easy as it is to get yourself a Caste Certificate with a few palms greased; it will be quite a challenge to verify the same with process being riddled with holes.

A Caste Certificate is an easy route to success. Verifying its authenticity at education or employment stages will be a challenge but the damage done cannot be redeemed.

FROM OUR CEO’s DESK

Indeed, the screening industry is evolving. New vistas create new opportunities.

The frauds revealed at Yale are eye-openers for all educational institutions. The instances give further credence to institutions streamlining and collating data of their students for easy verification for both; other educational bodies and employers.

Cases of fake caste certificates will be innumerable considering the value it holds for a significant segment of the Indian society. Challenge will be to systematize the procedure of verification of the document. With the procedure of issuing Caste certificates so fluid, it is indeed an upstream swim to validate the authenticity of the issued document.

A case where an education institution reverted in writing that the earlier disposition as Fake was an oversight on their part opens a thought about the genuineness of the other responses. Was it truly an oversight or are we to question the integrity of the written response?

ISO 9001:2000

The ISO Certification, an important milestone for the organisation as the audits assisted us validate and strengthen our processes as did the constructive feedback we have consistently received from all our clients.

IBM Award for Best Partner in Business further strengthens our belief in our processes and motivates us to work continually towards further improvements.

Moments like this are greatly valued.

We look forward to all feedback, positive or otherwise which help us mature our processes.
