Wipro fires employees for faking CVs

Sujit John & Mini Joseph Tejaswi
Wednesday, March 22, 2006 TIMES NEWS NETWORK

Wipro has just fired some employees for faking their CVs. It has also filed police complaints against several recruitment agencies for helping these employees falsify CV information.

IBM India recently sacked many employees for the same reason. Some are said to have worked there for two years.

TCS, also facing this problem, has from this year outsourced the entire process of CV verification to a specialised agency.

Experts say recruitment agencies and recruitment personnel in companies too are often part of this fraud.

Fake CVs: A Huge Threat to IT Sector

Sunday, May 7, 2006 UNI Bangalore

While on one hand the unbridled growth of the IT sector in the country has triggered massive employment opportunities, on the flip side it has brought to the fore fake and ''dressed up'' CVs of potential candidates, calling for sustained efforts to curb the menace. Experts feel the menace was compounded by the rush with which firms were hiring professionals to meet their project deadlines.

A cross section of IT industry leaders, HR and Skill Assessment companies, when contacted, said at least 15 to 20 per cent of the CVs received by various companies were fake.

With skewed supply-demand position, there was pressure on the consultants to create resumes within a short span of time. Hence, little scrutiny was carried out. A thorough technical interview could easily spot a cooked up resume. Besides, most placement agencies do not have any process in place to verify the authenticity of resumes. A code of ethics and professional standards should be in place for all placement agencies, both big and small, to adopt.

Companies should at least share negative data on truant candidates. Some placement firms have been blacklisted for using unfair practices like helping candidates ''dress up'' their CV.

Fake a CV and Work with MNCs

Wipro sacked 25 employees. A day later, Wipro lodged police complaints against not just the employees, but also the placement agencies that were responsible for them being there in the first place. Wipro found to its horror, that in some cases, employees had shown in their work experience records, having worked for companies that did not even exist.

A KPMG study on fraud says 15%-24% of CVs in India are fake and one out of three cvs misrepresent facts. Entities that fight this menace say the number could be as high as 30%.

There are fake CVs in all industries but only BPOs are under spotlight because they are conducting checks seriously

Resumes: Fake it and you break it

Sunder Ramchandran | April 17, 2006

According to the Society of Human Resource Managers more than 53 per cent of all job applicants lie to some extent on their resumes?

Recently a national daily reported that Wipro had fired some employees for faking their CVs and also filed police complaints against head hunting agencies helping them. Such incidents have also been reported in technology majors like IBM.

And if you think that this is only prevalent at the lower levels, think again. David Edmondson who was the CEO of Radio Shack (a US based electronics retail giant) for 11 years admitted to lying about his educational credentials on his resume and was recently asked to leave by the board of directors.

Wake Up America

Indian BPO employees with Fake credentials, fake education.

Folks:Thanks to Indian Media for keeping informed.

US Greedy Companies are outsourcing jobs in millions to India and millions on the way with almost NO safeguards to protect our identity and protect our personal information such as our social security numbers, credit card numbers, birth dates, driver license numbers, medical history, medical/x-ray/pathology reports, bank records, phone numbers, addresses, names, income, employment history, 1040 tax returns, financial assets/liabilities/transactions, family history, debt, bank balances, mortgage, property, investments, the list goes on.

Be ready to be a victim of "Organized Crime". Your data could be sold to underworld criminals. US companies are NOT asking their Indian agents to screen Indian employees.

FROM OUR PRESIDENT's DESK

From the incident of WIPRO firing 25 employees and filing police complaints against several recruitment agencies, it is evident that the faking fever has deeper roots than one would have imagined. Candidates fudging facts for better jobs, though unethical is still understandable. But when recruitment agencies jump into the fray, situation becomes extremely sticky.

Companies like TCS & IBM have faced similar situations too. With the trend catching on fast, not only at the lower rungs but more dangerously at top notch positions, background screening seems to be the only way to halt the march before the powder keg explodes!

With an unprecedented demand of skilled workforce of 2.3 million professionals to meet the 60 billion dollar export revenue target by 2010 as per the NASSCOM-McKinsey Report, and our present education system only geared to churn out 7,00,000, the situation is alarming! Indirect employment to another 6.5 million workers is the icing on the cake. From the figures it is evident that 'dressed up' CVs will be appearing with increased frequency at recruitment desks.

It is time to gird up the gauntlet and set up processes to screen and verify backgrounds before hiring!

EDITORIAL

· A huge demand for recruits to meet outsourcing commitments.

· Pressure on consultants to find appropriate candidates for plum jobs with stringent deadlines.

· Burning desire to rise up the corporate ladder and reach positions of power and plum packets.

With the mismatch in demand and supply of the right candidate for right jobs, the situation is getting graver. The candidate fudges facts to secure jobs with lucre. The recruitment agencies either overlook the fudging or in some cases encourage the trend for their piece of the pie.

The employer has to get more watchful with the increasing commitment to quality and delivery standards.

There has been an outcry in the US about data being bandied about among unsecured and unverified and maybe unscrupulous employees.

To stem the rot before it hurts the forecasted economic growth, Indian companies will have to pull up their socks and ensure all norms of global confidentiality are adhered to.

As the global awareness to corporate malpractices makes inroads into the Indian corporate thinking, background screening at all levels of recruitment will be an integral part of the hiring process.

FROM AUTHBRIDGE CASE FILES

Recruitment agencies are now hand-in-glove with candidates in falsifying facts to land plum jobs.

With some BPOs wanting to recruit not absolute freshers but young people with some work experience, recruitment agencies are known to create fictitious companies with a valid address and telephone numbers to create fake employment for freshers.

This provides leverage to both, the agency and the candidate.

Aware of the screening process these 'companies' verify the employment details. It is only on physical verification of the address that reveals the truth.
