Two and steadily rising....
Stepping into the Background Screening fray, the first tentative steps of AuthBridge were to conduct 'pre-employment background screening' per se. Into its third year of existence; its time to look back at the road traversed and the road to be charted; time to set sights on milestones reached and milestones to be achieved.
Rationale for employee screening were the costs involved in bad hiring decisions and loss of branding and company viability a wrong hire would result in. Conducting checks on education and past employment among others appeared a non-intrusive way to weed out the unsavory from the employment fray.
Facing hurdles en route, AuthBridge has been striding on. Major roadblocks have been the lack or absence of reliable databases and the non-conformance to set processes in the nationwide system of operation; reluctance to speedy response by educational bodies and the getting past the quagmire of police records.
Efforts to create, collate and consolidate databases by various bodies are on the rise. Also on the rise are ways and means to ensure authenticity of data and documents crucial to proving identity and stated antecedents. In the US, Canada, UK there are identification numbers using which past history of addresses, employments, credit and criminal records can be searched out. Philippines has a clearance certificate. In India there is currently no single document which is proof enough of the verifiable parameters.
The government initiative of MNIC, Multi-purpose National Identity Cards, aims to overcome the bottleneck. Discussed and endorsed in November 2001, the first set of national identity cards was handed over to the citizens in May 2007.
The cards stating name, sex, names of parents, date of birth, place of birth, marital status, name of spouse, identification marks, finger biometry and photograph are to form the basis for more efficient e-governance and the preparation of a computerized national register of Indian citizens, providing a unique National Identity Number to each person.
University of Hyderabad has taken an initiative of using a tiny gadget, Radio Frequency Identification Chip to check fake certificates. The chip containing the students' mark sheet and other information will come at a cost to be borne by desirous students.
Crystal Gazing With companies going global, screening has crossed borders and issues dogging background screening are privacy laws and laws specific to nations. Crystal gazing into 2008 indicates balancing personal rights so as not to create a class of people with records and so unemployable.
In the US, electronic verification of the I-9 form, under SAVE Program (Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements), has already been mandated for use in Colorado and may become compulsory countrywide.
Biometrics and drug-testing play an increasing larger role in overseas recruitment. In India, these are still in nascence and their importance as a process is still to fruit. Fingerprint verification is still a restricted process.
Web has added a novel dimension to recruitment and screening. Recruitment experts advise job hunters to Google themselves before stepping out into the competitive job market to see if a search pulls up blog entries written about legalizing marijuana or drunken party photos with friends! Social networking sites and blogs are today being touted as the arena for staffing and understanding the personality type. Plenty of unanswered questions hang there though. 2008 will tell us the progression and how accurate the crystal gazing has been. |

Screening industry trends worldwide aim at delving deep. While it surely is prudence to ensure right hire and the deeper background screeners delve, more credible will the screening be; word of caution is not untimely.
Social Networking & blogging sites as tools for background screening are powder kegs. Screeners will need to step wary on their usability.
Customization of checks for differing levels and for different job profiles is certainly the order of the day. Screening junior levels is more a pre-cautionary and validation check while at the senior levels checks need to be more incisive to unearth even minor details relevant to the position held.
Professional reference checks are crucial and need to be conducted knowledgably. Verifiers need to use interrogative skills to dig out information from the referees.
Trends notwithstanding, AuthBridge team is working tirelessly towards setting standards and exceeding expectations. Ajay Trehan

“Employees in junior management need attitudes and skills different from the skills needed at middle management and top positions; hence questions posed to referees need to be customized thus," explained Ajay Trehan, CEO, AuthBridge Though the criticality of discrepancies at entry-levels is lower than that of middle & senior management levels; the huge numbers recruited may allow employees with questionable intent to enter the portals of Corporate India without so much as a backward glance |
