No one is above faking

'Fake', it appears is a word most commonly in use today. From fake documents to fake credentials, from faking educational qualifications to faking employment details, it appears no domain, no industry or no hierarchy is spared!

A practice head of one of the largest IT firms in India with fake degree certificates from IIM Ahmedabad and IIT Mumbai.

The chief executive of InterContinental's Asia Pacific business Patrick Imbardelli held a Bachelor of Business degree from Victoria University in Australia, or so he claimed.

Former RadioShack CEO David Edmondson admitted inflated educational credentials.

Marilee Jones, dean of admissions at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) admitted she had fabricated her own educational credentials.

Laura Callahan, former deputy chief information officer with the US Labor Department obtained her bachelor's, master's and doctorate degrees from Hamilton University, an unaccredited school in Evanston, Wyoming, that requires scant academic work.

An English Wikipedia administrator known as Essjay was found to have made false claims about his academic qualifications and professional experience stating he held doctoral degrees in theology and canon law, and worked as a tenured professor at a private university.

'Fake degrees are not so humorous when high-level employees get jobs and promotions with the bogus credentials'; neither is it acceptable at entry and middle management levels.

India Inc lacks ammunition to counter fake CVs

June 15, 2007

By Ambika Naithani

A practice head of one of the largest IT firms in India was suddenly asked to quit as he had furnished fake degree certificates from IIM Ahmedabad and IIT Mumbai. The person had managed to survive in corporate India for 20 years before the fraud was discovered.

This is not an isolated case. India's growth story has created a huge demand for jobs, but companies haven't been able to make employees' verification process and background check strong enough to complement the speed of hiring. Hence, many companies have employees on their rolls who haven't worked at places they say, haven't studied in the colleges they claim in their CVs.

Of the million verification checks made by us, one out of every five CVs had misrepresented data mostly about the past employment details," says managing director (West Asia) of First Advantage Ashish Dehade.

Apart from companies becoming aware, candidates are getting smarter and coming up with innovative ways to deceive their employers.

While MNC-operated IT and ITeS companies are most alert in terms of the verification process, others like in the manufacturing sector and Indian companies are yet to catch up.

The problem that Indian companies are facing is that data on candidates is just not available in digital form. For instance, it takes 24 hours for a complete background check in the US and almost 14-25 days in India.

Some companies do not find it feasible to conduct verification tests for all their employees since attrition is quite high and people quit within 2-3 months from joining.

Verification is a testing process as we have moved into semi-urban and rural locations.

FROM OUR PRESIDENT's DESK

Screening has come of age it appears. Two years and industry awareness is definitely on a high. When AuthBridge took its first infant steps the road ahead was uncharted. Was background screening the future to safe hiring?

Today as we gear to celebrate two years of AuthBridge, the road ahead is mapped and answers for all in the know to see; background screening is the route for safer hiring practices.

With the job market all a flurry and hiring happening at break-neck speed one unsafe hire is definitely a rough all on this super-highway would wish to avoid. Cases of fraudulent credentials have been much in the news especially of high-level executives. The risk with seniors carting suspect credentials needs no elaboration.

Screening existing employees has also churned up unexpected revelations. Faking CVs or submitting fake documents are common. The case of an existing employee working since past 2 years in the guise of her now dead sister was an eye-opener.

Background screeners, hiring agencies and employers need to keep a hawk-eye on all hires; past and present and each detail and document needs precision scrutiny.

FROM AUTHBRIDGE CASE FILES

Case of Dual Identity

Cases of fudged facts and tampered documents come aplenty but a case where the candidate assumed a different identity with a set of documents is unusual to say the least.

'Navneet' took up the offer as her sister expired in the interim period between the offer made to her and her joining date.

Solving this case was a challenge as overlapping employment tenures, tampered documents and the verified  facts needed some convoluted logic for us to reach a conclusion.
